NOVA ARTS PHASE 2

THE VISION

NovaCity is a youth provision that has developed activity centres in Rotherham and Barnsley to provide physical activity and educational opportunities. We operate 7 days a week delivering Parkour, Dance, Tricking, Cheerleading, and Aerials across the 2 centres to young people from 18 months upwards.

We have always wanted to fill a provision gap that was identified by our own dancers. The fact that there is no high-level, professional performance training, with links to higher education and the industry available to them locally. Our Barnsley building offered a solution. Abandoned for 20 years, the 4-story building had the potential to grow our organisation and the impact we provided to the community.

We started by building the activity park, featuring our bespoke parkour park, sprung floor and dance studio. This time we added a trampoline park to increase the activity opportunity. After a year, and a successful Sport England build we were able to build out the first floor of the building and Nova Arts was born.

Our students have maintained a 100% pass rate and have gone on to attend and graduate from some of the most prestigious performing arts schools in the country.

We had always planned to increase the capacity of the college and continue to invest in the facility to establish the highest quality training environment, thus, preparing our students in the best possible way for the future. Unfortunately the COVID pandemic, the subsequent price rises, difficult economic conditions, and, most recently our roof failing the project was put on hold.  Until now.

THE PLAN

  • The plan is simple and has remained the same since its inception. To provide a professional quality arts training environment to serve the young people of Barnsley and the wider South Yorkshire area,

  • We will repair the roof with the help of our landlord

  • We will raise the money for the refurbishment of floor 2

  • Expand our capacity for our BTEC course

  • Develop the space and environment so that it is suitable to offer degree-level education and support

  • Create more performance opportunities in Barnsley for young people

  • Develop spaces that can be utilised by the wider community and support more performers with practice space.

  • Create new and strengthened partnerships across the council and theatre spaces to establish Barnsley as a hub for the arts, continuing to contribute great performers for TV, Film, Stage, and Dance

THE BUILD

STUDIO

Our new studio will be the focal point of the new build. A flexible space with professional flooring and sound system will be the new home to an expanded roster of students. When not in use by the college this space will be made available to community groups and during holiday clubs.

COMMUNAL AREA AND CANTEEN

A space for students to socialise and relax. The kitchen will deliver healthy and nutritional food and education to enhance the student's experience. In the future, our alternative provision students will utilise the kitchen as part of catering courses and qualifications and use produce from our allotment programme.

CLASSROOM

Our classroom will be the hub of the theory section of the course. An intelligent smart board and video screen combined with expert teaching will enhance the practical work that takes place.

AUDIO VISUAL STUDIO

Audio-visual work is extremely important in the arts. We currently rely on external collaboration for the work we need for our shows for example. We believe collaboration to be extremely important, but bringing some of it in-house we will give more opportunities for our students. Singing, filming audition tapes, website and showreel creation are just some of the things this will allow. We will also add qualifications to this.

TOILETS/WASHROOMS/CHANGING AREAS

Clean, modern changing and washroom facilities.

OUTSIDE - ENTRANCE/LIGHTING/SIGNAGE

Shining bright as you enter Barnsley and in keeping with the style of our partner theatre The Lamproom the frontage of the building will be developed to showcase the college and contribute to the surrounding area which has seen less investment than areas such as the nearby Glassworks project. We aim to brighten up the area, reduce and reduce anti-social behaviour through enhanced lighting, CCTV and community responsibility.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We need help to do this. We estimate the work will cost over £100,000. We are breaking this down into sections to make it manageable, and you can help with any of it. Our strategy is as follows.

Our students have already begun to fundraise. Throughout the year they will participate in events and challenges to contribute funds.

We are writing to all the funders accessible to us to ask for the capital to build this project. Due to its scale, we will likely need match funding or other contributions.

The Nova Arts Gala will bring dance schools across Yorkshire together to perform at a celebration and fundraising event. Details of the event can be found on the Nova Arts Community Page.

We have created a crowdfunding page to allow the public a safe and secure way to contribute to the project. Various perks and rewards will be available.

You can find the details here.

CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMME

We would like to invite businesses and individuals to participate in this project and help the college achieve its goals. If you are looking for a way to support a project using your social responsibility funds then Nova Arts is the answer.

As you can see, your support will be contributing to the education of young people in South Yorkshire directly promoting growth in the Arts.

We are looking to forge long-term, legacy relationships that will continue to benefit the community long after the build is complete.

Supporters/Patrons will be acknowledged across our programme, within the building and at shows and performances.

We will create bespoke packages for our supporters so please get in touch. You can download the info back with example packages and benefits by clicking the button below.
